Mt Alford day hike

Have you always wanted to climb a mountain? This is the perfect start for your Hiking experience. With your walking companions and experienced guide equipped with knowledge and a friendly smile this walk takes you through beech forest, open farmland and subalpine shrubland with great views. From the summit (1,171 m) there are wide views across the Canterbury Plains and the inland mountains. Typical forest birds found in the bush are fantail/pīwakawaka, bellbird/korimako, grey warbler/riroriro, rifleman/tītitipounamu, tomtit/miromiro and silvereye/tauhou. This walk is suitable for intermediate walkers with light tramping/hiking boots. Distance 9.2km of uneven up and down travel. This is an excellent day trip, with lots of opportunity to take photographs.

Woolshed Creek hut hike

Remote from all civilization save for your experienced guide Woolshed Creek Hut offers a trip for the beginner. Track is generally well formed; some sections may be rough, muddy or steep, but all is manageable. Light tramping/hiking boots are needed and you will feel you have achieved at the end of the day! This walk features rugged bush, open sub-alpine tussock lands, historic coalmines, impressive volcanic formations and deep canyons and of particular interest is the New Zealand falcon/kārearea which nests on Mount Somers.

Or for a more demanding walk

At the back of Mount Somers, an ancient volcano, this track explores a fascinating landscape with handsome grasslands and sweeping views. We walk in via Rhyolite Ridge Track and for a circuit trip we return via Woolshed Creek Hut and walk out on the Miners Track. This hike is a truly unique experience hiking in New Zealand's magnificent landscape. This is a full day hike for intermediate walkers with a good level of fitness.

This is a small sample of many varied trips that we can share with you.

Now imagine you have walked all day and when you get back to Rata Escape a hot shower awaits and time to relax in clean clothes with a drink. Your dinner is all planned out and awaits a small amount of your input to produce a delicious meal and a relaxing evening.
