(Maximum group size 6 people)

Mountain biking options

There is some wonderful riding in the open country of the Hakatere Conservation Park and we hope these possibilities will whet your appetite! These tracks (Grade 2) are fairly level or gently rolling and ideal for intermediate and beginner riders.

A circuit of Lake Emma, Lake Camp and/or Lake Clearwater (20 km)

This is a great day out in huge vistas under big skies. With your companions you will be transported with bikes and encouraging guide to the start, met halfway for lunch and picked up again at the end of the trip. The majority of the ride is on 4WD farm tracks circumnavigating these pretty and wild backcountry lakes which are popular with trout fishermen. The trip will take you through grasslands and some of the best preserved wetlands in the country, and you’ll have the chance of spotting rare plants and waterfowl including the Australasian crested grebe / kamana.

Some groups may prefer to mix in exploring with biking and the afternoon could instead be spent on a trip up to Mt Sunday (Edoras, of Lord of the Rings)

Enjoy Lake Heron and the Lake Emily / Stour river track. (15km)

This trip takes you into another valley of the Park and you begin the day absorbing some local history, before exploring the shores of beautiful Lake Heron (named after the white heron / kotuku). We’ll visit a kettle lake where in early summer there is the incredible sight of thousands of delicate white gentians. The afternoon ride will take you around Mount Barossa, passing Lake Emily and emerging from the rhyollite gorge of the Stour River.

There are more options for advanced riders who are keen for bigger days and more pain. We can point you in the right direction or may even join you!
